A VPN, or virtual private network, is a private network that extends across a public network, such as the internet. It enables users to send and receive data across shared or public networks as if their computing devices were directly connected to the private network. Applications running across a VPN may therefore benefit from the functionality, security, and management of the private network.
VPN technology was developed to allow remote users and branch offices to securely access corporate applications and resources. To ensure security, the data travelling across the VPN is encrypted. VPNs are typically used to connect remote offices and individual users to the corporate network. However, some VPNs can also be used to connect two networks together, such as a home office and a corporate network.
VPNs are not limited to just corporate users. Many home users also use VPNs to secure their Wi-Fi connections. VPNs can also be used to access region-restricted websites and services. For example, if you are travelling and want to watch your favourite show on Netflix, but the show is only available in the US, you can use a VPN to change your virtual location and access the show.
There are a number of different types of VPNs, but the most common type is the private tunnel VPN. This type of VPN creates a secure, encrypted connection between your device and the VPN server. Data passing through the VPN is encrypted, so your privacy is protected.
To set up a private tunnel VPN, you will need to download and install a VPN client on your device. The VPN client will create a secure connection to the VPN server, and will encrypt all data passing through the connection. You will need to enter your VPN username and password to access the VPN.
Once you have installed the VPN client, you can connect to the VPN server by opening the client and clicking the Connect button. The VPN client will automatically connect to the VPN server. You can also select a specific VPN server to connect to.
To disconnect from the VPN, simply click the Disconnect button in the VPN client. The VPN client will automatically disconnect from the VPN server.
